EXCLUSIVE: Renewed fears over Cheryl Cole's health after friend Derek Hough reveals she has 'fluid on the lungs'

There were renewed fears over the health of Cheryl Cole last night after it emerged the stricken star has 'fluid on her lungs.'

The pop singer and X Factor, who is being treated for malaria, has been in hospital since Sunday evening.

The update on her condition was inadvertently revealed by her close friend, dancer Derek Hough.

The American - who travelled with her to Tanzania, where she picked up the potentially fatal tropical disease - has been visiting Mrs Cole regularly since she fell ill.

On Wednesday, he was overheard discussing Mrs Cole's plight by another hospital visitor, who said afterwards: ‘I’ve seen Cheryl’s mum and Derek in there. They stayed overnight last night. I overheard Derek on his phone saying she's got fluid on her lungs.’

Last night, a close friend of the singer's told the Mail: 'She has got fluid on the lungs. She's not good, no. She's still in intensive care so it doesn't look like she'll be out of hospital for a while yet.'

Friends of the singer admit they now 'don't know' when she will be out of hospital.

Dancing On The Stars winner Hough is said to be feeling incredibly 'guilty' because it was his idea for the pair to go to Tanzania, where she is believed she was bitten by the infected mosquito.

His stepfather Aaron Nelson, 54, told The Sun: 'Derek feels guilty. He is very distressed about all this.

'He feels he has done this to her. He rang his mom yesterday in tears.

'Derek feels it's all his fault. He organised the holiday as something wonderful. For it to end up like this is terrible. He feels dreadful.'

Mrs Cole, 27, was transferred to the University College Hospital from the private Cromwell Hospital earlier in the week and admitted to its specialist tropical diseases unit.

And one expert yesterday said that, following the revelation, it is likely Mrs Cole may have the most serious form of malaria.

Consultant of infectious diseases at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, Dr Martin Wiselka said fluid in the lungs suggest Mrs Cole is suffering falciparum malaria.

That is the most deadly strain of the virus and can cause blood to leak into the lungs of sufferers.

Dr Wiselka added that while Mrs Cole has probably discovered the illness in time and so avoided damage to her kidney and liver. However, he said it is unlikely she will be able to return to work for a number of weeks.

Trip: Cheryl arriving at Heathrow with dancer Derek after a trip to Tanzania last month where she is thought to have contracted the illness

This makes it extremely unlikely she will be able to return as an X Factor judge in time for the boot camp section of the ITV talent show which takes place later this month.

Her performances at the V Festival in Chelmsford and Stafford on August 21 and 22 are also likely to be under threat. The timing of the release of her second album - which had been due in October - is also likely to be under pressure.

Dr Wiselka said: ‘The chances are that she has got falciparum malaria which is the most serious form and most commonly found in Africa.

‘The malaria travels around the body in the bloodstream and can affect other organs like the kidneys and liver. In severe cases it can lead to organ failure and this is how people die from malaria.

‘The more parasites you have in your blood the more serious it is. If it is caught early then there are less parasites and I would have thought I has been caught reasonably early in her case.

‘She will be in hospital until the malaria and the complications clear up, which is usually a matter of days, but it will take weeks to recover.

‘There has been talk of her taking a week off but I think that is way too optimistic.’

The consultant added that the fluid in Mrs Cole's lungs was likely to be blood from leaking vessels damaged by the disease.

He said she may need oxygen administered as well as drugs already being used to fight the infection.

He continued: ‘Malaria affects the blood cells, they get damaged and they damage the blood vessels.

‘If your blood vessels leak then you can end up with blood in your lungs. Also sometimes doctors give fluid and it ends up in the wrong place.

'She might have simple treatment like restricting the amounts of fluids she is getting or she might be given drugs.

‘To deal with the fluids she might be given oxygen because the fluid stops oxygen getting into the bloodstream so you need some help.’

Hough, 25, was by her bedside in her private room yesterday with her concerned mother Joan Callaghan.

The Daily Mail has also learned her estranged husband Ashley Cole has also been in contact.

Despite his wild antics with a string of bikini-clad girls while on holiday in Los Angeles, sources close to the Chelsea and England footballer have revealed he has been telephoning the UK regularly to check on her condition.

A source said: ‘Ashley is very concerned for Cheryl', but last night, a spokesman for Mrs Cole declined to comment.

* Meanwhile, London Mayor Boris Johnson also told of his concern for Mrs Cole. Speaking on a visit to the West London Rape Crisis Centre, Mr Johnson told the Mail: ‘I’m very concerned about that poor girl Cheryl Cole.’

_____________
This is a joke, right? He cheated on her. She can be with any man she chooses - what you've written is advice from depressed and unhappy people. Get some self-respect, mate!
Why in the world would she want to get back together with a man who could care less about her? THAT is the definition of loneliness. Just because she's single doesn't mean she's lonely. HE looks lonelier than her - he's spreading himself pretty thin with random girls he's spending a lot of time with. Looks pretty lonely to me because he can't be alone with his own thoughts or feelings.
I hope she gets better and I hope the NHS can use this to get the message out - yet again! - to take ALL the malaria tablets when you go on holiday and to watch for symptoms even months later.

The women is quite ill and yet here is everyone having some form of slanging match between Cole's Fan's and Minogue's fan's. To be honest, I'm not a Cheryl fan, but in fairness, she is sick, wish her well!! I I probably dislike her because I am jealous, but then again, I love Dannii Minogue, and I'm jealous of her too.
Either way, wish the both of them well and get on with your lives.

They're dannii minogue fans, apparently Cheryl is taking all the attention off the Aussie - how dare she?

By the way, anyone read the messages on the article about the birth? I haven't been able to keep food down since I read them.

People who are sending get well messages to Tweedy are being ridiculed and get called sad because they don't know her, yet its ok to send sugary, saccharine tosh to Miss Perfect, someone who THEY'VE never met either.
- Jules

Nice to see me receive some green arrows for a change - I'm not the only one who finds the double standards so unfair when it comes to the comparisons between Tweedy and Minogue.

If the anti-Tweedy writers feel that the story about her illness is over-dramatised, I feel exactly the same way about Minogue's so-called 'emergency' birth. First time births can be unpredictable, mother and son are just fine - no need for the needlessly exaggerated comments that make out that Minogue is some kind of heroine.

I hope she gets better. Malaria is a dreadful disease, a killer. She's privaleged but I still hope she pulls through, because no-one deserves it in my opinion. She's also had enough on her plate. The best she can do is put career aside. You've nothing if not your health.

The fact the husband doesn't realise what a horrible disease it is enough to return from LA I should think would ensure they never get back together. Whatever went on with them I'm not that well read on the subject, but that's no husband.

I don't like spiders, jelly fish, brussel sprouts or Mrs Cole, but I read about them. That's why I read about them, because I don't like them. It's quite normal to read about things you like, things you don't like, and things you couldn't care less about. I like reading and read everything. You don't get fluid on the lung with pleurisy. Pleurisy is inflammation of the pleural linings, they rub together because they are inflamed and DRY

I noticed how the majority of the negative comments come from women? probably overweight women too. If this has been Kimberley instead of Cheryl you would be gving her so much of your concern and worry, even though she also would be getting the very best treatment as Cheryl is. You catty women are so transparent.
Cheryl is a huamn being just like everyone else. If you don't want to know about her then ignore the stories on her. Nobody is forcing a gun to your head and making you read and comment about her are they? Do you really have nothing better to do all day other than make catty, bitter comments about someone you don't even know? So silly since this hate is based on pure jealousy and nothing more.

As for comparing this to children in Africa. When did any of you last take an interest on the people in Africa? Exactly you never have, you don't care about them, you are nasty people with no not an jot of decency between you. I am sure you would be happy if she did die. Then you would have to find someone else to hate. You really must hate yourselves and your own lives to put so much time and effort into making hateful comments about someone you don't like. 'Fluid on the lungs' does not necessarily mean pneumonia (as stated by Sam, Tyne & Wear). This very vague and non medical phrase could refer to any one of several conditions involving the lungs.

However, luckily for Cheryl, she is in one of the best centres for tropical disease management in Europe, if not the world. I'm sure that when she's better she'll be glad that some of her tax money supports the NHS as no private hospital in the country can provide the excellent care that she is undoubtably receiving at UCH.

Those that comment on the 'Mrs Cole' tag, is that not just the media using that name? She was recently introduced by Simon Cowell as Cheryl Tweedy!
She is not responsible for what the papers call her, and isn't in a postion to argue over her name!

Let the poor woman recover in peace

- Sam, Tyne and Wear, 09/7/2010 03:32

No it's not. Pneumonia is pneumonia and is of course nasty but is ultimately a chest infection. Sounds like she has pulmonary oedema - feels like drowning and can sound like it too when severe - which is also serious.

Our thoughts are with Cheryl, Derek and their families at this terrible time.

It's very easy to say that the signs of Malaria could have been spotted earlier, but the desease has so many similarities to other common ailments. Derek, don't blame yourself for this. Education about Malaria is the key for travellers. Lets hope that the relatively early diagnosis will save Cheryl.

I'm a Newcastle expat working in Nigeria for the last five years and can see the effects of Malaria at first hand. My prayers are with Cheryl for a full recovery.

I do hope people will stop making bad jokes and cruel remarks about Cheryl Tweedy Cole's illness. I have no strong feelings about her but she is clearly very ill and comments such as 'it's only maleria' just show ignorance.

Look, a specialist is saying here that she is seriously ill, the fact that others are ill doesn't diminish her suffering and I hope she recovers soon. Her mother must be worried sick.

Poor Cheryl, this sounds really serious.

I think she has been looking well below par since she split from her husband. It may have helped make things more bearable for her to keep so busy, but it might also have made her more run down & more vulnerable to illness.

She's in the right place, though, and seems to have a lot of support.

I also feel really sorry for her Mum who looks tired, drawn and worried (as you'd expect I know), but when your child is sick it breaks your heart as you feel so helpless.

Fingers crossed she will soon be on the road to recovery.
