I blame myself for Cheryl Cole's malaria, says guilty friend Derek Hough as she pulls out of X Factor boot camp and V Festival

Dancer Derek Hough have spoken of his 'guilt' after convincing Cheryl Cole to go on holiday with him to Tanzania, where she was bitten by a malarial mosquito.

The American has been a regular visitor to the ailing star's bedside since she was hospitalised last week after contracting the tropical disease.

Dancing With The Stars winner Hough - who was been romantically linked to Mrs Cole since she split from husband Ashley earlier this year - admitted he was been 'worried sick' about the X Factor judge.

He said: 'I blame myself for all of this. I convinced Cheryl to come on holiday with me to Tanzania. We might have gone somewhere else if it had been up to her.

'I’ve been worried sick about her in hospital. When I’m not by her side I’m praying for her.'

Hough spoke for the first time after the Girls Aloud singer began to show signs of 'good progress' over the weekend.

The 27-year-old has apparently has contracted one of the deadliest strains of the illness, which has left her weak, jaundiced and unable to talk.

Yesterday, her spokesman confirmed she would not be taking part in the X Factor boot camp stages later this month or performing at V Festival in August.

The singer, who is believed to have contracted the deadliest form of malaria, was transferred to a private clinic to recuperate after spending most of last week at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, part of University College London Hospital.

But medics have warned the hard-working star that she now need to take things easy to ensure a full recovery.

A spokesman for Cole told MailOnline yesterday: 'Cheryl Cole is making good progress but following medical advice she will not be able to take part in X Factor's boot camp stage or perform at V Festival.'

A source told MailOnline that no decision has yet been made on whether another guest judge will be drafted in, specifically to replace Cheryl.

An ITV spokesman added: 'Cheryl will not be attending The X Factor boot camp later this month. Our priority is to ensure Cheryl is fit and well before she returns to work and to give our contestants a fair and proper opportunity to compete in the show.'

* Even though anti-malarial precautions are available, they are only 90-100 per cent effective.
* An average of nine Brits die every year from the disease, with an estimated 2,000 Britons contracting the disease abroad.
* Malaria can be found in parts of Africa, central and South America, the Caribbean, the Middle East, India and south east Asia.
* Many sufferers don't realise they have the disease until 10-14 days after being bitten by the infected mosquito.
* In the most serious cases, malaria can lead to breathing problems, liver failure, coma and eventual death.
* Plasmodium Falciparum is one of the deadliest strains of malaria and is transmitted by the female Anopheles mosquito.

A source told the News Of The World yesterday: 'It got so bad she was literally only hours from death's door.

'The fact is, we came close to losing someone very special.'

The Mail also revealed last week how the stricken star has 'fluid on her lungs.'

'Even now she can't talk. She drifts in and out of consciousness and when she comes round all she can do is sob,' the News of the World's source added.

It is likely that Cole will not be seen in public for the next two months while she recovers from the illness.

She has already missed the weekend's X Factor auditions in Manchester.

Pussycat Doll star Nicole Scherzinger performed the role of guest judge and was drafted in to replace Dannii Minogue, who is currently on maternity leave after giving birth last Monday.

The timing of the release of Cheryl's second album - which had been due in October - is also likely to be under pressure.

The singer had been feeling ill for a week - but her health problems came to light when she dramatically collapsed at a photo-shoot last Saturday.

At first it was believed she was suffering from exhaustion or gastro-enteritis – and she was ordered to rest.

However, the following day her condition deteriorated rapidly and she was rushed to hospital.

Doctors have also been that Mrs Cole may take longer to recover because of her punishing work schedule.

The star had thrown herself into her work since her marriage to Chelsea and England footballer Ashley Cole collapsed in February.

As well as being an X Factor judge, Mrs Cole is also been building a successful career as a solo pop star.

In recent months, that has meant her taking part in a European tour and recording her second album in both Britain and the US.

A friend told the Mail: ‘Doctors are concerned that her immune system is weaker because she’s been working so hard. They believe this may make it harder for her to recover quickly.’
